2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Harmful if swallowed.

Eye

Causes burns to eyes. May cause conjunctivitis and corneal damage.

Skin

Causes burns to skin. Harmful if in contact with skin.

Inhaled

Irritating to the mucous membranes and respiratory tract. Inhalation may cause coughing, nausea, and pulmonary oedema. Harmful by inhalation.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Chronic exposure can cause damage to liver and kidney. Mutagenic effects are not expected. Not classified as a sensitiser or carcinogen by Worksafe .

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Immediately rinse mouth with water and then drink plenty of water. Seek medical attention.

Eye

Immediately wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids held open. Seek medical attention.

Skin

Immediately wash thoroughly with soap and water. Apply sterile dressing and seek medical attention. Immediately remove contaminated clothing.

Inhaled

Keep patient calm and remove to fresh air. Seek medical attention. If danger of loss of consciousness, place patient in recovery position and transport accordingly. Apply artifical respiration if necessary. First-aiders should pay attention to their own safety.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically based on individual reactions of patient and judgement of doctor.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 (rat): 730 mg/kg. Dermal LD50 (rabbit): LD50 >200 <2000 mg/kg. Inhalation LC50 (rat): >4.2 >8.4 mg/l/4h. Acute eye/skin irritation (rabbit): corrosive. Acute inhalation hazard (rat): mortalities after 2 minutes exposure in a highly enriched and/or saturated atmosphere at ambient temperatures. Ames tests: no mutagenic effect. Additional information: under certain circumstances nitrosamines can form in contact with nitrosating agents (eg. nitrates, nitrous oxides); nitrosamines were found to cause cancer in animal studies.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

TWA 3 ppm = 12 mg/m3 ; STEL 5 ppm = 30 mg/m3

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure workplace is well ventilated to maintain air concentrations below exposure standard, including the use of local exhaust ventilation.

3.3 Personal Protection

Protective goggles, protective gloves (Nitrile/PVC) Vapour respirator if ventilation is inadequate. Protective overalls. Hands and face should be washed before breaks and at the end of the work shift.

3.4 Flammability

Highly flammable. Flash point: -11 deg C. Keep away from all sources of igntion and heat. Earth all containers to reduce the possibility of sparks from static electricity. Vapours can form flammable mixtures in air if heated above the flash point and/or when finely sprayed. Do not use in confined space. Use only in well ventilated areas.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Must be stored and transported in accordance with all dangerous goods regulation relevant to flammable liquids. Keep containers tightly sealed. Sources of ignition should be kept well clear. Prevent electrostatic charge. Protect against moisture. Protect from air. Fire extinguishers should be kept handy. Protect from acids and acid forming substances.

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

UN No. 1296

Class 3

Sub Risk 8

Hazchem Code 3WE

Pack Group II

EPG No. 18

Shipping Name TRIETHYLAMINE

Hazard FLAMMABLE CORROSIVE

Risk Phrases

R11 Highly flammable.

R35 Causes severe burns.

R20/21/22 Harmful by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed.

Safety Phrases

S1/2 Keep locked up and out of the reach of children.

S3 Keep in a cool place.

S16 Keep away from sources of ignition.

S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

S29 Do not empty into drains.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Cleanup personnel should wear full protective clothing including self contained breathing apparatus. Do not let product enter drains. Sources of igntion should be kept well clear. Prevent from mixing with acids.

Contain spill and soak up with absorbent material. Place waste in labelled containers for disposal.

Disposal

Dispose by incineration at an approved industrial facility in accordance with regulations. Contaminated containers should be emptied as far as possible and then passed as on for recycling or reprocessing after being thoroughly cleaned.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Highly flammable liquid. Vapours are heavier than air and may travel to a source of ignition and flash back. Aqueous solutions are flammable unless diluted exte separately contaminated extinguishing water, do not allow to reach sewerage or effluent systems. Forms an exothermic reaction when mixed with acids.

Extinguishing Media

Firefighters should wear full protective clothing and use self contained breathing apparatus. Use water, dry extinguishing media, carbon dioxide (CO2) or foam as extinguishing media.
